GWO BST Offshore
Global Wind Organisation Basic Safety Training for specialists working at offshore wind farms. Covers both the initial and refresher course.
Overview
GWO BST Offshore is a standardised Global Wind Organisation training module that provides the essential knowledge and skills for safe work at offshore wind farms. The course covers five submodules — First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Working at Height and Sea Survival — all adapted to the specific offshore environment.
The course combines classroom theory with intensive hands-on practice simulating real emergency situations at sea and inside a wind turbine.
Who this course is for
- Technicians and engineers who will work at offshore wind farms
- New employees before their first visit to an offshore site
- Staff whose previous GWO BST certificate is due to expire (refresher)
- Subcontractors and maintenance teams
Programme content
First Aid
Providing first aid in an emergency in the offshore environment, resuscitation drills, and managing injuries.
Manual Handling
Safe lifting and carrying techniques, and reducing risk in confined spaces.
Fire Awareness
Fire prevention, use of firefighting equipment, and evacuation procedures on the turbine and vessel.
Working at Height
Fall arrest systems, safe movement inside the turbine, and rescue from the nacelle.
Sea Survival
Evacuation from a vessel or platform, use of life jackets and life rafts, and behaviour in the water.
Requirements for participants
- Minimum age of 18
- Medical certificate confirming fitness for work at height and physical activity
- Good swimming ability (for the Sea Survival module)
- Comfortable sportswear for practical exercises
Certification
On successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate that meets the GWO standard, registered in the GWO database (WINDA). The certificate is valid for 24 months, after which a refresher course is required.
